HKCERT Security Alert: Businesses should watch out for WannaCry Ransomware
Issued dateˇG16/05/2017
SourceˇGHong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre
In light of the “WannaCry” ransomware attacks on computer users across the world including Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) of the Hong Kong Productivity Council warned that “WannaCry” is a very vicious malware which would scan for computers with an unpatched Microsoft Windows vulnerability over the Internet and attempt to infect them.  HKCERT makes an appeal to all companies to take the following preventive measures to protect themselves against ransomware attacks:

1. Ensure Firewall is in place to protect the network and do not expose the SMB service in the open network (i.e. close the public access to TCP ports 139 and 445);

2. Perform backup of the computer data offline to another storage device such as USB drive, external hard disk. Remove the storage device right after backup.

3. Update the Windows system and install the security patch provided in the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010;
- Start with desktop computers, then connect laptop computers one by one to apply the security update.

4. Regularly backup data and keep an offline copy.

Microsoft users may go to the following website to download the appropriate security update and installation instructions:
