Team Hong Kong sweep one Bronze Prize and seven Medallions for Excellence at 44th WorldSkills Competition

The 44th WorldSkills Competition held in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, came to a successful close on 19 October with the Hong Kong Team winning Bronze Prize in Beauty Therapy (The Bronze Prize winner Lau Wai-yin) and Medallions for Excellence in seven trades, including Mechatronics, IT Software Solutions for Business, Web Design and Development, Electrical Installations, Mobile Robotics, Hairdressing, and Visual Merchandising. A sparkling performance testifies to the globally benchmarked expertise of the Hong Kong competitors.

Print Media Technology and Graphic Design Technology are the most noteworthy trades to the printing industry. WONG Yee Tung, a student of Diploma of Vocational Education (Print Media) at VTC Youth College, and MA Chin Ming, a graduate of Higher Diploma in Visual Communication (Information Design) at VTC Hong Kong Design Institute, are the competitors of Print Media Technology and Graphic Design Technology respectively. In this competition, they gained the support and encouragement from the expert mentor, the interpreter and the whole industry. Competitors have spared no effort to compete and the experience must be helpful to their future career development and personal growth.
 
(Upper) With the expert YAU Wing Cheung’s guidance, WONG Yee Tung, a student of Diploma of Vocational Education (Print Media) at VTC Youth College, attended the trade of Print Media Technology and took a group photo with other competitors. (Lower) MA Chin Ming, a graduate of Higher Diploma in Visual Communication (Information Design) at VTC Hong Kong Design Institute, is the Hong Kong competitor of Graphic Design Technology. During the competition, she learned a lot and gained the guidance and help from the expert WONG Cheuk Yan and the interpreter HUI Siu Ling.

Hailed as the “Skills Olympics”, the biennial WorldSkills Competition aims at promoting professional expertise and the mastery of skills, as well as raising understanding and awareness of vocational and professional education and training in the international community. The WorldSkills Competition this year was held from 15-18 October.

The four-day WorldSkills Competition 2017 attracted over 1,300 talented young people from about 60 countries and regions, contesting 51 skills competitions. This year’s event boasted the largest number of participants to date, ensuring heated competition for the accolades. In some of the trades, the skills tests posed even bigger challenges as the contestants only learnt of their assignments onsite and then had to give their best to complete the tasks within the designated time – a demanding test of their responsiveness and nerve. 

A total of 22 young competitors –Hong Kong’s largest ever team –represented the city in 20 trades this year, namely Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering CAD, IT Software Solutions for Business, Print Media Technology, Web Design and Development, Electrical Installations, Mobile Robotics, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Fashion Technology, Cooking, Restaurant Service, Car Painting, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Graphic Design Technology, Visual Merchandising, Wall and Floor Tilling, Bricklaying, Painting and Decorating, and Joinery.
